English overview
In 70 CE (about summer), Roman forces under Titus captured Jerusalem during the First Jewish Revolt, and the Second Temple was destroyed. The event was catastrophic for the city and for temple-centered worship; it does not mean that every structure fell, that all Jews vanished, or that Judaism ended.
Josephus remains the main narrative source for the siege, but he is not neutral. Precise death tolls, claims about Titus’s motives, and stories about who started the fire should be read as Josephus’s testimony, not as uncontested modern fact (see scholarly caution on his sources and aims).

Josephus is indispensable yet not a neutral witness; exact casualty figures, Titus’s intent, and fire/blame narratives should be attributed to his account rather than treated as uncontested fact.
