Why Do Christians Have Creeds?

Christian “creeds” are not one unchanging formula—early shared Father–Son–Spirit confessional language, local baptismal/catechetical settings, and the 325/381 conciliar texts are related but distinct. This overview of functions and development does not treat later liturgical forms as word-for-word the 325 text. Needs-review seed.

  1. 早期共享的父—子—圣灵告白语言;
  2. 地方性洗礼/慕道教导中的信仰陈述;

English overview

Christians have creeds for historical reasons that should not be collapsed into one unchanging universal formula. Irenaeus, Against Heresies I.10, shows early shared Father–Son–Spirit confessional language as he claimed it—not a finished Nicene Creed. Cyril of Jerusalem’s fourth-century catechesis is evidence of one local baptismal/instructional use, not a pattern for every place and time.

Nicaea 325 issued a conciliar creed with homoousios; the longer form commonly called Nicene or Niceno-Constantinopolitan and conventionally linked to 381 is not word-for-word the 325 text. Nicaea did not settle all later disputes; Constantine did not invent Christianity.

Creeds could serve confession, teaching, and liturgical identity—not a universal membership test or proof-text. Later reception (including the filioque) is distinct from this question’s main historical explanation.
